Innovation is what makes a product stand out in the crowd. The current spat is being fought through media between Aamir Khan, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Chetan Bhagat. The contentious issue of copyrights which as the crux of the spat also seems to be an innovative way to market the product 3 IDIOTS as also 5 POINT SOMEONE, the book from which supposedly 3 IDIOTS has been inspired.
It works both the ways, one those readers who have read the book and have not seen the film would be induced to go and watch 3 IDIOTS while those who have seen the movie and not read the book may like to leaf through it to find out the point of commonalities. The moot point is the spat could have given a new idiom of marketing 3 IDIOTS and more such films in future that may be inspired from a written book as the element of controversy associated with acknowledging or ignoring the written word is what fuels the controversy. Aamir Khan has been associated with innovative ways to market a product and could this also be one of the innovations that have been thought about, as he resorted to innovative marketing to sell 3 IDIOTS even before the film was released.
Timing with the release of the film 3 IDIOTS, Chetan Bhagat has also been featured in number of magazines and newspapers with particular reference to this work 5 POINT SOMEONE and indeed it has given a new impetus to the sales figures of his first work.
One thing that has not been brought into focus is the promotion of rural and innovative technologies that Aamir Khan does after he passes out from the engineering college and it has striking parallels with what Prof. Anil Gupta of IIM Ahmedabad has been doing, i.e. foot mapping the country with his shodh yatras or research excursions to bring about innovations at grassroots levels into mainstream of commercial production. But Prof. Gupta is not complaining!
In this melee one thing that has been forgotten and that needs to be set into agenda is the manner of usage of technology to curb ragging that may give ideas to students in various engineering and other academic institutions to use it as a veritable tool for ragging, the incident associated with pissing which has been portrayed in two different contexts in 3 IDIOTS.
When the government is thinking about ways and means to counter the menace of ragging, floating such ideas defeat the purpose. Therefore there is a need to enter a disclaimer on the screen underlining that the incident is not being used to promote ragging, but to curb at and it should not be used for settling the scores. If it is not done, then the whole freshness of approach that 3 IDIOTS has brought about may appear idiotic.
