RANN and ISHQIYA
When was the last time when a Big B clashed with Naseerudin Shah at the box office on the same day? Well, it is happening this Friday when ISHQIYA is going to clash with RANN for the eyeballs of the viewers.
Let's analyse how the odds are stacked up? On the one hand Vishal Bhardwaj is coming with ISHQIYA after his phenomenal success at the box office through his earlier work KAMINEY and for ISHQIYA he also has Vidya Balan as a star who has let the audience eat through her hands with the scintillating performance that he gave in PAA. RANN on the other hand, has a Big B but Ram Gopal Verma has had rather a tepid romance with the box office through his past works and it would indeed be interesting to watch whether he would be able to buck the trend with RANN. He is tying his level best to do so, and it is manifest from the fact that for the first time for him, through television programmes he is interviewing his lead performers to build up an opinion about his new offering.
If one were to compare the performances of the lead actors between ISHQIYA and RANN to assuage who may be having an upper hand, from the sheer performance perspective it would be Big B as he has given a lifetime performance in PA while Naseerudin Shah in the recent past had again gone back to his genre of art films where it is a select audience who is aware of his acting, be it through PARJANIA, or KHUDA KE LIYE.
RANN is a film that has contemporary in its setting as it puts into question the role media is playing and whether there is a need for self-defined limits that media needs to impose on itself, or whether it should play the role of selective activism to highlight issues that have an association with the educated sector of the society. It is more so relevant in light of the Editors Guild that has been formed by the broadcasters which has taken upon itself to induce an element of regulation in its oeuvre. ISHQIYA on the other hand is about the underpinning of heart that does not know an age to flutter.
It therefore is going to be an exciting clash at the box office, and let the best film win.
