Though the Hindi film industry continues to have new female faces being launched on a regular basis, the odes that are still sung are to the beauties that lived and dazzled on the silver screen in an era gone by. It is per se not only restricted as a phenomenon to Hindi film industry, but has applicability in Hollywood as well. When one talks of beauties of Hollywood immediately names of Marylyn Munroe, Audrey Hepburn etc., pop up in a conversation, none of the present day divas find mention in the same reverential sense as their peers from the past.

In the same manner when beauty in Hindi cinema is talked about, the talk mostly is made with reference to a Madhubala, a Nargis, a Waheeda Rehman, and a Hema Malini or for that matter a Rekha, Madhuri, Sridevi, Juhi Chawla, etc. Beauties of the present times, be it the likes of Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor etc., are not talked with the same reverence barring few like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, etc.

What could be the reason for such differentials? Well, for one, the beauties of the past did not make an effort to appear beautiful, they were beautiful in their own way, while the beauties of the present times have to make an effort to appear beautiful, and owing to the effort that is put in to appear beautiful, the notions of beauty that make beauty what it all is about, goes for a toss.

What could be the other reason that the stars of present times though are judged as sexy, sassy etc, all are called as beautiful in the conventional sense of words? The reason that primarily comes to mind is the over-exposure in case of present day female stars and those that belonged to an era gone by. The stars from the old times did not believe in over exposure and tried to create an aura of mystique around their persona that provided value addition to their persona. It is not so the case in the present times. In the present times, the belief seems to be that one should make hay while the sun shines. But in the process of making the hay in the sunshine, sun burns are also popping up and they are militating against the notions of beauty.

Another factor, apart from over exposure that has to be kept in mind is that our writers, especially the song writers of the present times have not written any sonatas eulogizing any of the beauties of the present times, while nearly for all the of the beauties of the old times specific songs were written which also contributed in adding value to their notion of beauty. May be, under exposure and efforts by our song writers could turn the tide.
