While Hollywood thrives in using black as the choice colour whenever it wishes to make a gangster film, never choosing white as the choice of colour to express a class, Hindi film industry is particularly enamored of White color whenever it wishes to make a gangster film. The trend has been manifest for quite a long time, and ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI also follows in the same pattern, so we have an Ajay Devgn, possibly portraying the character of Haji Mastan on the silver screen in all whites.

Otherwise white has been there as a leitmotif for Jeetendra and also Raj Kumar, but when it is a gangster film white sartorial dress is the medium of choice. The impact of the color is indeed brilliant on the screen, as it was done in AGNEEPATH where Danny appeared in white or for that matter in HUM where Danny again was in white dress. For that matter when Amitabh Bachchan had usurped Danny's throne he was shown in all white even to the extent of wearing white shades as well, and it was probably for the first time that a male actor had worn white shades, without it being used as a prop for comedy.

If one goes into history of white, it was the father of the nation who had advocated wearing of white clothes in a big way, and possibly the choice of white as a cloth is sort of a channel vehicle on the path from the world of black, seeking entry into white world. No wonder, even the green horn politicians prefer it like anything, more so, through the world of Hindi films than anywhere else.

However, penchant for white dress apart for the war lords and the gangsters, as most of the films of the ilk are situated in Mumbai, and it being a city where the climate is generally humid throughout the year, white indeed is the preferred color of the choice for the common man, and a war lord or a gangster derives his power from the common man, so there indeed is no better way to identify with him than through his color of clothes, so white indeed is the preferred choice.

It altogether is a different matter whether a gangster appears in a white cloth and white dress in real life or not? For Ajay Devgn, it indeed would be for the first time that he would be appearing in a white dress, it defining his character that he is portraying as it is in ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI. It has given him a different look, and let's hope that the film indeed turns out to be wonderful for him as well.
