KHATTA MEETHA: Whether comedy should be loud to convey the humour

KHATTA MEETHA should have been rather given the slug-line-comedy means to shout at the top of the voice. Indeed it is one of the prominent motif that has emerged from the film, and it could turn out to be its bane, as the theme which was selected was rather contextual, what with rains playing havoc all over the country, and civic infrastructure availability being exposed as a sham in the name of infrastructure, KHATTA MEETHA had an opportunity to let the audience eat out of its hands. But it has become a Khatta experience indeed for the audience, primarily for the sheer fact that the comedy is too loud that at times it appears that the senses have been assaulted.

Comedy, if one were to understand it in its original sense of terms was characterized by being subtle, delivering humor in the dead pan manner but without hurting sensibilities of any viewer. It was primarily the reason why the comedies of the kind of those made by the likes of Basu Bhattacharya, Hrishikesh Mukerjee etc., all are still lapped up. If one were to find out a comedy film from the past that could be construed as loud, but without being bawdy, it was PADOSAN. It indeed was the first film of the genre which was loud however it never descended to lower levels. But it seems Mehmood took a cue from PADOSAN and made loud comedy his signature statement, which infrequently was lewd, but it gave a new lease of life to Mehmood's acting career.

The comedy of present times is characterized by this loudness under the perceived notion that shouting is a form of comedy. It could precisely be one of the reasons why the so-called 'comedy' films are not being appreciated by the audience. The development at the beginning of decade has now lost steam, Govinda being one of its key protagonists and the audience now is not at all inclined to accept an inane comedy that does not flow out of the content but is a patch work of so-called humorous moments.

May be, time has come for Akshay Kumar to think about giving a thought to returning back to action, it being his launching pad, and interspersing it with sprinkles of comedy, to recapture his fan base, that otherwise seems to be drifting away from him. Film makers like Priyadarshan also need to think out of box, to deliver a really comic flavor, only then can he hope of extending his honeymoon with the audience, or else audience would continue to be indifferent to the fares like KHATTA MEETHA and for the filmmaker it would be a KHATTA affair.
