World Cup Football, frenzy, and Hindi cinema

As the curtain is raised on the Football World Cup, it indeed is an opportune moment to revisit the moments associated with football that have been created in the world of Hindi cinema, as also to bring into perspective once again use of South Africa as the location for Hindi films. The reference to South Africa is guided by the fact that it is a major international tournament that is going to have a monumental affect on the economy of South Africa.

While India as a country has football matches all the year around, cinema, be it in Hindi or in Bengali or Malayalam, the football frenzied states, has not been that generous in catching the spirit. Even then here are some of those football moments followed by country specific references pertaining to South Africa.



SAAHEB: It was the first film where the tribulations that a football goalkeeper undergoes were brought out in succinct detail, and though the film did not establish a chord with the audience, Anil Kapoor proved his mettle as a competent actor.
