What started as a trickle now seems to have become a steady stream. Shah Rukh Khan after mesmerizing the audience through his television performance in the serial Fauzi went on to capture the heart of the nation with his debut in DEEWANA and continues to do so with panache. There was a long hiatus after Shah Rukh Khan graduated from being a television actor to a film star, till the advent of satellite television. Once the satellite television captured the imagination of the nation, those with dreams in their eyes started using the platform of television to underline their acting prowess and use it as a channel vehicle for graduating to films.

Those who followed this path to stardom include Rajeev Khandelwaal, Irrfan Khan, Prachi Desai, R Madhavan, Vidya Balan, Aamna Shariff, Gracy Singh, Hansika Motwani etc. In this list the most illustrious and successful has been Irrfan Khan who has now acquired the stature of an acclaimed international star. Other such successful stars include Madhavan, Vidya Balan and Prachi Desai. Rajeev Khandelwaal, Hansika Motwani and Aamna Shariff, though have made their debut in Hindi films, still have to find the moorings of the kind that Irrfan Khan and Shah Rukh Khan have acquired for themselves.

One of the underlining motifs of graduation from television to films is that for most of the actors it takes more than five to six years to establish themselves on to the silver screen. Likes of Prachi Desai are fortunate that they get the script like ROCK ON to make their debut, but she also is still awaiting an encore to cement her place.

The process of graduation from television to films in the present times is marred by excessive exposure through serials as also the attempt on the part of the stars to set aside the image that they acquired for themselves through television. This is precisely the reason, why most of the stars go into hibernation for sometime, once they get a chance to step into the film world, the idea being to allow the public to forget about them. Likes of Madhavan could also succeed as they had made their debut on television quite a longtime ago, when satellite television was still in its conceptual stage.

Hollywood also follows the same trajectory, but the difference in case of Hollywood is that there the television stars continue to work parrallely in the television serials as well. Besides, the major television channels continue to produce niche television films as well for these stars, HBO being the prominent television channel that gives them leverage in the market.

May be, time has now come for the television channels to go into niche production to carve an exclusive identity for their stars as also for their television channels.
