Priyadarshan with BUMM BUMM BOLE has again shown what a sensitive director he is to be able to contextualize the problems that children in an insurgency infested area have to face. While the shooting for BUMM BUMM BOLE has been done for the major part in Ooty, it is after a long time that the problem has been looked from the perspective of children growing up in an insurgency hit environment. Mani Ratnam with DIL SE had brought into distinct relief the travails one has to face if he is residing in North India, with BUMM BUMM BOLE the futility of insurgency has been underlined. After all, for a child his innocence is lost in the cross fire of insurgency.
Based on Majid Mathi's 1997 classic, CHIDLREN OF HEAVEN, Priyadarshan has indeed tried to understand the travail through the world of children what it means to be residing in an insurgency-infested area. There could not have been a better actor than Darsheel Safary and Ziyah Vastani, supported by competent performances from Atul Kulkarni and Rituparna Sen Gupta. Darsheel Safary has again underlined that his success with TAARE ZAMEEN PAR was not a fluke but he is here for a long haul. The kind of emotions that he conveys through his eyes, hands underline that he is an actor par excellence.
For a child growing in a school environment in the modern times shoes have great relevance and it has not been an underlining motif of modern times only. In Children's World, loss of Cinderella's sandals has been a story that has been a favorite across generations.
Coming at a time when the schools have closed in most parts of the country, BUMM BUMM BOLE, is going to strike an instant chord with children, as most of the time of the children is spent jumping and running around in the house, and if a film has been made using it as a content, children are going to get enamored about it. One needs to make special mention of the direction of Priyadarshan. He had been famous for directing comic capers like HERA PHERI and PHIR HERA PHERI, BHOOL BHULAIYA etc., but with BUMM BUMM BOLE he has carved a niche for himself to be equated along with directors of the likes of Gulzar and Shekhar Kapoor who have made some very sensitive films using children as main actors.
The only irritant in the film is the over emphasis of the brand of shoes that is the booty that Darsheel strives to win by running the marathon. It could have been done in a subtler manner.
