If one goes by the promos of DABANGGSalman Khan plays the role of a police inspector who uses the power that has been accorded to him by the virtue of the uniform that he adorns to set the system right. Indeed same is the theme of the Bhojopuri film RANGBAAJ DAROGA which has been released a week prior to DABANGG and is running to full houses. It has nearly the same theme, i.e. a police inspector who is more of a warlord in the uniform. In the same manner Shatrughan Sinha had starred in a Bhojpuri film INTERNATIONAL DAROGA.
It might be a sheer coincidence, but DABANGG as a film has also been set in the background of the Hindi belt where the Police Inspector of the Police station calls the shot.
Scores of films which have been made where the lead actor has played the role of a police inspector have the theme where the Police inspectors have been a law unto themselves, and DABANGG is another addition to the theme, the difference being that is tried to infuse nuances of the style that are leitmotif of the Hindi belt. For instance the kind of pelvic thrusts that Salman Khan has been given in DABANGG are the thrusts that are symptomatic of Hindi belt dance numbers, no wonder Munni Badnaam hui is topping the charts all across in all forms.
For a change the DABANGG daroga of the film who has been given as esoteric a name as Chulbul Pandey or Robinhood Pandey is the role that the youth in the Hindi belt aspires for. It has really to be seen to be believed; more so during the time of police recruitments for the post of sub-inspectors and DABANGG has also included the same feature and commented upon it in elaborate detail.
Even Aamir Khan had played the role of a DABANGG policewala, in SARFAROSH though as he was playing the role of Police Commissioner, he did not have the option to play to the gallery in as coarse a manner as Salman Khan gets it in DABANGG. There indeed is a palatable excitement at the booking window after a really-really long time, and DABANGG is going to bring the era of pre-release buzz around a film back in a big way. It would also have an impact on the content treatment as it is being done in Hindi cinema, now factoring in the realities with which the common man grapples with, rather than showing subjects which do not have a serious connect.
