ANJAANA ANJAANI and the spectre of unknown

Sajid Nadiadwala must be wondering what to do, as his prot�g�e, and long time associate Salman Khan who has given quite a lot of hits to him including JUDWA, MUJHSE SHAAADI KAROGI etc., has emerged as a veritable threat to his new film ANJAANA ANJAANI owing to the phenomenal success that DABANGG is enjoying all over the country. The ostensible reason for postponing the release is on account of the plausible reason that the court could decide the verdict on Ayodhya and it may have negative effect on ANJAANA ANJAANI, latest offering by Sajid Nadiadwala, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. On the face of it, even press conference was addressed to put the issue under perspective, but how many of those who follow the trend of cinema would buy the argument?

The moot point is that ANJAANA ANJAANI has been postponed as DABANGG continues to rule at the box office all across the country and it would be difficult for ANJAANA ANJAANI to replace it, as ANJAANA ANJAANI again is a film that has been set in USA with all the trappings of modern society, a trapping with which a small minority of the country may identify with but not the majority population of the country. To contain DABANGG effect Sajid Nadiadwala banner had to spend more than Rs 5 crore to advertise about the film but momentum still continues to swing heavily in favor of DABANGG.

Films with urban sensibility like ANJAANA ANJAANI would not be able to attract the audience universally all across the country as it is a situation that can happen in the realm of fiction but the situation as it has panned out in DABANGG is a situation that pans out for the common man all across the country.

Makers of ANJAANA ANJAANI had hoped that the multiplex audience may not express its solidarity with DABANGG in the second week as well and then they could have released their film, but the impact of DABANGG in the multiplex audiences is to be seen to be believed, leave aside those at the single screen theatres.

Then can one say that DABANGG has emerged as a film that could create moment of disruption in the history of Hindi films? it seems likely, as there is hardly a soul that has not been entertained by the kitsch in DABANGG and it indeed is a clarion call for the filmmakers to wake up and smell the coffee as audience has clearly sent the message across that the cinema has to bring in reference points of connect to which common man can identify with or else, it would continue to reject the dishes that are being offered to it by the film making fraternity.
