Deepika Padukone must be thanked for having contributed in her own imitable manner for facilitating adoption of hot pants as new lounge attire for common girl in India. Even a conservative campus like Delhi University when it opened for a new session this year, was adorned with colorful pair of shorts as a new dress making a fashion statement. Be it the advertisement campaign for a soap or that of Coffee brand, built around inviting the neighbor to share a cup of coffee, where in the mainframe Deepika is relaxing in a short, is the ease of being in a state of relaxation that could have been the motivating factor for the girls of the present times to warm up to it. Incidentally, film stars, though, they may be modern in their lives, think twice before appearing in a pair of shorts in the frame of movie or for that matter in the public life. But it is this new generation who has decided to assert its identity and empowerment, and is using a pair of shorts to make the statement, Bipasha Basu also appearing in it off and on.

Just more than two decades ago, when Zeenat Aman had worn a pair of shorts in DOSTANA, a song was written as an underlining statement that the clothes that she had adorned invited the roadside Romeos to tease her. The song was Bahut Khoobsoorat jawan ek ladki sung rather teasingly by Kishore Kumar.

In the same manner, it was Madhuri Dixit who for the first and probably last time had worn the shorts in the song, ek do teen, from TEZAAB playing a saxophone in the interlude of the song.

In the previous generation, it was left to Karisma Kapoor to wear the pair of shorts with aplomb in DIL TO PAGAL HAI, as it was done by Urmila Matondkar in RANGEELA that had made her the heart throb of the nation.

Even Dimple Kapadia had worn it only once or twice, it was twice in fact. First time she wore it for her debut film BOBBY, while the second time she wore it in her comeback film ZAKHMI SHER.

However, these three famous film stars rarely wore a pair of shorts in the public life and it was left to the likes of Deepika Padukone to exorcise this dress, and also to make a statement that as a boy or a male can be comfortable in a pair of shorts, in the same manner a girl could also be as comfortable in a pair of shorts as well.

The level of acceptability that a pair of shorts has gained in the wardrobe of a female is more to do with the confidence that this generation has acquired, a confidence that is a by-product of the urge to have a fit and toned body. After all, if one has a fit and a toned body, only then he can have the confidence to appear in a pair of shorts in the public space.
