Indeed the famous song from the film GAMBLER of Dev Anand epitomizes the sense of ennui that his fans are feeling all around the world. Ennui has created such a buzz around his persona that he would be smiling from heaven about the legacy of romance that he has left for his fans. For a change however the fans of Dev Anand are not crying for his loss, but have a stoic smile, as his name never was associated with sadness, pathos, melancholy or loneliness, but it always connoted hope, love, romance, yearning, longing, anticipation, fulfillment and soul satisfaction. Kamal Hassan had summed it up succinctly when he said as tribute to Dev Anand, "When I heard the news I was quite for some time and then a smile came out on my face, it never appeared for anybody else."

For a man, having a career span of more than five decades, last hit that Dev Anand gave was JOHNY MERA NAAM and it was more than thirty years ago. So for a career of fifty years and more, to survive such long based on performance of initial 20 years, indeed is a pointer to the kind of place that he could create among his fans through his sheer performance.

His greatness lay in the fact that whichever female actor he romanced with, he fell head in heel over the character and as a result the romance for the character oozed out from each frame, and this is what could have created a sense of bonding with his female fans as each one of them felt that he was romancing them rather than the female actor on the screen. It is also owing to this reason that in most of the obituaries that have been written accompanying photographs are majorly from the times when his films scored success at the box office. He was the true Peter Pan of Indian cinema.

Though he was an urban hero, he had this innate ability to merge his song situations in the rural backdrop with a consummate ease, be it 'Shokhio mein ghola jaye' from PREM PUJARI which was shot in the corn field around Kolhapur, or 'He main kasam li' from TERE MERE SAPNE, or even songs of DUM MARO DUM, all the songs had a rural touch or a rural ambience as an integral component of the location. It was a symbolic gesture, connoting an urge of the rural youth to aspire for urbanity, but also underlining yearns to celebrate festivity in the rural surroundings. May be, when Dev Anand shifted his locales to urban areas and forgot the country side, the migratory connect that he had with the audience started losing its stream and that could have been the point when he started losing the grip with his fans.

Maxim is propounded for the sheer fact that all his famous songs, be it from GUIDE or JEWEL THIEF, NAU DO GYARAH, BAMBAI KA BABU etc., all had a touch, a connect with the rural audience as well. Nobody else could attempt such kind of cross over that Dev Anand made his USP and this could also be one of the reasons how he could come up with the really first cross over film of the country GUIDE.

If one has to see the convergence of urban and rural India at some point, songs portrayed and picturised by Dev Anand are a veritable source of information to look into. His songs would continue to entertain humanity for all times to come and that is how he would continue to proliferate in memory of his fans.
