From the time he made his debut as a film director, in the world of commercial cinema, Vishal Bhardwaj has been one director who has given very strong characterization for the female characters, be it Tabu in MAQBOOL, Kareena Kapoor, Bipasha Basu and Konkona Sen Sharma in OMKARA or for that matter Priyanka Chopra in KAMINEY. Now with 7 KHOON MAAF Vishal Bhardwaj has indeed given a shot to the construct called woman, who continues to allure, entice and enchant the male species from the time the civilization came into vogue. (Vishal Bhardwaj incidentally, debuted with MAKDEE where he had a luxury to experiment with Shabana Azmi as the chief protagonist, and it could have whetted his appetite to make this his forte in film making.

It has also happened for the first time in Vishal Bhardwaj's career that he has repeated his female actor, actor being Priyanka Chopra, whom he had cast in a firebrand role in KAMINEY. But the canvas of performance that he has given to Priyanka Chopra in 7 KHOON MAAF would be envy for any female actor or for that matter any male actor as well to display the histrionics in as diversified form as could be possible. More so, owing to the fact that Priyanka Chopra could be one of the rare actors in the Hindi cinema world, who had the courage to portray characters from an adolescent age to portraying an old lady of around 60 years of age in 7 KHOON MAAF, serenading the emotional fools called male and consigning them to dustbins eventually once she is bored of them.

From this perspective, 7 KHOON MAAF indeed is a film which does not have parallels anywhere in the world of cinema as nowhere so far has such kind of characterization been reported. That could be the reason why 7 KHOON MAAF has been praised highly at the Berlin Film Festival as well.

The moot point and the real challenge for 7 KHOON MAAF would be whether the audience would lap up this experimentation by Vishal Bhardwaj. The sense of apprehension is being underlined, as it could open the vista for interesting content that is lying in profuse abundance in the country side. Indeed, one needs to emphasize the point that the audience needs to grow up and start lapping up interesting content that really makes cinema a visual treat to watch.
