Is it indeed a wakeup call for the writers of the Hindi film industry in particular, as there is a perception about a crisis of monumental proportions building up for them? Quite a large number of Hindi film producers have suddenly taken an easy way out of adapting hit South Indian films, and are making a big success out of it. The latest example of this trend is manifest in READY which is a remake of Telugu film, and apart from the story line, even the tag song, Dhinka Chika is the same as it appeared in the Telugu film. I have heard the original song sung in Telugu and vouch that the original version is much better than the Hindi version.

In the same way the biggest grocer of Hindi cinema of all times, GHAJINI was also inspired from the hit Tamil film. Or for that matter one of the biggest hits in Big B's career, AAKHREE RAASTA was an adaptation from Kamal Hassan film, or for that matter NAYAKAN which again was an adaptation from Kamal Hassan film.

Apart from the adoption of the films, off-late even the male stars of South Indian films like Rana Duggabatti, Ravi Teja etc., are making determined forays into the world of Hindi cinema.

Rajnikanth and Kamal Hassan would be mightily pleased that the seed sowed by them is taking green shoots now, though it has taken quite a long time for the green shoots to grow.

As a matter of fact this phenomenon has been a stark motif of Hindi cinema right from the black and white era times, when a Dev Anand and a Dilip Kumar appeared in only film that they did together INSANIYAT, which was produced by Gemini. When one talks of cross over films in the context of Hindi cinema the first real cross star who appeared in films made in different studios of then Madras was Rajender Kumar and he was illustratively followed by Jeetendra in a big way.

When an Aamir Khan or a Salman Khan does not think twice for appearing in a remake of hit film from South India they provide a subtle hint to the writers to come up with unique content. One needs, however, put a caveat here. Even hit Hindi films of the likes of MUNNA BHAI and 3 IDIOTS are being remade into respective South Indian languages.

Moot point therefore seems to be that the stars, the producers, the directors, everybody is searching for an elusive hit content and it can be language neutral. In a way it enlarges the eclectic canvas of cinema all around in a big way and it also is a challenge for the writers to come up with innovative content.
