It happened during one of the visits to Vizag, where as soon as I entered into the hotel room, the bell boy put on the television he tuned it to the local music channel and started walking off. I asked him why he had put the music channel of the language that I may not understand, and he told that lyrics may not be understood by me, but the musical nodes would not be disliked. The same happened in one of the hotels in Chandigarh as well, where I was treated to specter of Punjabi local music.

As a matter of fact, if one steps into hotel rooms across any part of the country, and scans the television channel, preponderance of local music channels would be a remarkable feature all across the country. Anu Kapoor would be mightily pleased by this development as his experiment of telecasting Antakshri along with the producer Gajendra Singh (who has quit Zee TV to start his own venture), more than 15 years ago has become a vertical of such iconic proportions that no broadcaster worth his grain, be it in the organized or the unorganized sector can ignore its telecast. Sa Re Ga Ma Pa still is going strong and so far 1000 plus episodes of its program have been broadcast.

Now the winners at the end of a season find that multiple opportunities open up for them, be it in the form of anchoring the show subsequently, or engaging the Diaspora audience around the world, where followers of the language try to find an organic link with their mother tongue through these song shows on television and otherwise.

It has become one of the most profitable verticals for television channels in the recent times, and it also has created employment opportunities for scores of musicians who form an integral part of the band show, a singular feature of Antakshri based programmes across all television channels. As a matter of facts after soaps it is the second best earner, and the chances of rejection are feeble, as ours is a country where music predominates our existence day in and day out. These song shows have also provided employment and visibility to out of favor singers, even in vogue singers to continue to maintain their visibility, hitherto a difficult proposition to obtain through their musical creations for movies. After all, everybody cannot be a Rahman, and he also has started tasting failure, so why not have a cushioned existence of visibility through scores of music shows.

Advent of such television shows has meant that the faces behind the playback have become a face across the drawing rooms, and it is helping them in launching their own road shows and functions as well, as now the face of a voice, even four five songs old is brought into limelight through these shows.

As a choice of career, music indeed has moved up a few notches, as if one has a voice or the ability to fiddle with the instruments, then one can indeed make a career sooner or later. So let the music roll on.
