The innovators of MMS would never have thought that the idea of introducing a video based message service to bring in an element of livelihood into conversations would morph into sharing of intensely private moments of couples in public domains with impunity either to seek revenge, or for the sheer act of audacity. It was precisely what was underlined when Dibakar Banerjee had made LOVE SEX AUR DHOKA underlining the thin diving line between these three components, which have emerged as one of the most crucial edifice of modern day life of youth in the country. No wonder, the rawness of LOVE SEX AUR DHOKA had made the Indian audience squirm, squirm more as the so-called moral fabric of the society was shred apart, rather than the squirm being a by-product of shock in actuality.
Well, now just two years down the line MMS is now being given a new avatar, RAGINI MMS, but an element of paranormal has been introduced into it as the element of paranormal loaded with doses of sex to titillate and also scare the morbid fear out of a couple about the escapades of pleasure in haunted places. Based on the Hollywood film PARANORMAL ACTIVITY and also inspired by THE BLAIRWITCH PROJECT for innovative usage of technology to shock the audience, RAGINI MMS indeed is a film that has an element of eeriness written all over it. Usage of MMS to create a sign of fright is what makes this film stand apart, and Ekta Kapoor's bold attempt indeed is going to be a cultural shock as the element of disdain between couples has become more so manifest after intrusion of MMS into the personal lives. Even Marshall McLuhan would not have dreamt that the quest for 10 seconds of fame would attain this manifestation.
Controversies apart, Ekta Kapoor must be given due respect for giving the genre of haunt a new manifestation where sex is an integral component. As has been her vaunt in the television industry of turning nobodies into face worth talking about in the drawing rooms, same has been the case with RAGINI MMS as well. The star cast is new Raj Kumar Yadav and Kainaz Motiwala, so the content rules roost, ably handled by director Pawan Kripalani. This is what cinema is all about and it needs to proliferate.
