Rockstars Or Superheroes: quest to enact either of the roles by Indian film stars

There is a perception among the majority fraternity that if one plays a role larger than life, is it in the form of a super star or a singing star, or a rock star then the chances of making inroads into the hearts of the fan is a surety. This is contrary to the premise of cinema making all over the world, where the characters that become successful are those who are shot through and through with elements of commonality. Indeed, if one were to go through the list of all time great movies, one thing that would emerge as the common motif, is that the list includes majority of those films which are based on trials and tribulations of the common man. This being the premise, it indeed is an opportune time to try to unravel this jigsaw puzzle.

KRRISH,
KRRISH, RA.ONE and ROCKSTAR

RA.ONE was the latest attempt by an actor, aka Shah Rukh Khan to play the role of a superhero, while ROCKSTAR which is going to hit the silver screens shortly has Ranbir Kapoor aspiring to become a rock star. The urge to play the role of larger than life by the film actors on the silver screen seems to be guided by the premise of the Indian social ethos of hero worshipping. Indeed, the average Indian citizen seems to find an image or a personality worth idolizing in scores of human beings and in inanimate objects. It is also manifest in the number of religious gurus that continue to flourish on a daily basis.

Possibly, the urge and zeal for adulation of a common Indian citizen catalyzes into an attempt by the film fraternity to come up with a product where the character is larger than the life. But the moot point is that the same Indian citizen is not ready in most of the cases to accord the stature of adulation to the cinematic expression by the mainstream actors.

To popularize and expand the ambience of popularization in Hollywood where larger than life characters acquire immense popularity, merchandize is also sold to create a halo of perpetuity around the character. But the same attempt does not succeed in India, the latest example being selling of merchandise associated with RA.ONE character which has not met with any success whatsoever. Same kind of merchandize immortality was tried around KRRISH  as well, but few months down the line, the associated merchandize was seen selling at peanuts cost at various outlets at Big Bazaar. Even then the fans were not enamored by the offer.

Now if one were to analyze the characters associated with music played by the film actors, the most popularity character has been that played by Rishi Kapoor, be it in KARZ, HUM KISSI SE KUM NAHI. However, his subsequent attempts to live up the image of a rock star came unstuck. As a matter of fact whenever a film star has tried to play the role of a singing star, most of the times he has been unsuccessful, be it Kumar Gaurav in STAR, Mithun Chakraborty in KASAM PAIDA KARNE WAALE KI, or even Big B in YAARANA. Surprisingly enough, unknown stars who have played the role of a singing character have met with huge success, be it those in DOSTI, or in BAIJU BAWRA, or AASHIQUE. Even the attempt of Katrina Kaif to play a role of a female rock star in MERE BROTHER KI DULHAN did not meet the desired success.

In view of the premise and the developments in this arena, it would be interesting to find the fate of ROCKSTAR when it hits the silver screen.
