DAM999 would be the first film in all probability which has been entered into the haloed portals of the Oscars library even before the film has been released in the cinema halls. Besides, it has also been caught in the tangled web of controversy, specifically in Tamil Nadu, where the politicians erroneously believe that DAM999, which is a #D movie, has indirect reference to the contentious Mullaiperiyar dam issue.
Erroneous indeed is the perception, as DAM999 is based on the award winning documentary DAMS-THE LETHAL WATERBOMBS and the BANQIAO DAM DISASTER of 1975 in China that claimed more than 250000 lives. DAM999 heralds debut of the director Sohan Roy, who has made his mark at the international arena by launching Marine TVC, which is world's first Global Maritime Television channel. Marine life has always been enchanting, but the problem in Indian context, more specifically in the Hindi cinema context has been that the view of marine has not been shown by a marine lover. But with DAM999, this anomaly would be released, as Sohan Roy is an avid mariner and he has strived to unravel hitherto unexplored contours of the marine life for the Indian audience. Besides, being in 3D the experience of exploring mystique of marine life would indeed be invigorating. To add authenticity to the script, the same has been endorsed by Hollywood veterans, Rob Tobin and Eric Sherman. DAM999 has also another unique distinction to its credit that it is a film that has been shot in English and has been dubbed in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. It marks the return of Ashish Vidyarthi to mainstream cinema after a really long time, and one expects a powerful of performance from him. CHECK OUT: A.R. Rahman graces DAM999's global music launch
Dams as a metaphor have vital associations with our lives. With the pressure cooked situations in which we live, we have built so many dams around our existence, as a veneer to camouflage the trials and tribulations which one has to face, and DAM999 tries to highlight this situation by recourse to the Navras tradition of Indian culture. To underline and emphasize the Navrasas, DAM999 has nine characters, unconnected to each other, caught by a quagmire of fate, actor composition being an eclectic mix of Hollywood and Bollywood.
One only hopes that with the kind of association and the importance that aqua has in our life, after all, three quarters of our boundary is surrounded by oceans and ours is a riparian state, DAM999 would indeed help in breaking various emotional dams that have come to dominate our lives and stifle our existence.
