"Actors like Amitabh Bachchan have their own 'highways' on the road of success, mera ek chhota flyover to bane." Says Rajpal Yadav

By Kshama Rao

If it were not for producer-director Ramgopal Varma, actors like Rajpal Yadav would have perhaps been relegated to playing sidekicks and two-scene character roles. But this week's release (Friday, October 10) Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon has Yadav play the 'hero' if that's what you can call his character. Says the actor, in a chic white shirt with a huge gold 'Om' resting proudly on his chest, "Ramuji hain isi liye, I can play this role. I think he's a boon, a godfather for actors like us. Just because he as a director keeps reinventing himself, trying out different genres, varied styles of films, his films are a pleasure to work in. So even the audience goes for a Ramuji film without any set images. To jab unka kaam dekhne aate hain log, hamara kaam bhi dikh jaata hai."

Expectedly, Yadav is excited. He's waxing eloquent about the maker and his film and why not, this is supposed to be a publicity interview for Main Madhuri… Talking about his role he says, "I play Raja, Chutki's friend. While Chutki (Antara Mali) is Madhuri Dixit's fan, Raja Chutki ka bahut bada fan hai. And he is with her right through her journey to become a star like Madhuri Dixit. When two people like Chutki and Raja trust each other implicitly, then it becomes easier to take risks. I play this guy who unconditionally loves her."

Yadav doesn't believe in the 'hero-heroine-villain' concept. He says, "As far as this film is concerned, like most other Ramuji's films, the script is its hero.'

Talking more on Main Madhuri… Rajpal says, "The character of Raja is a 3-D one. Even a prop has to look 3-D to make its presence felt. It's about all those aspirants who come to Mumbai to make it big in the Hindi film industry. I certainly empathise with the characters of Chutki and Raja. This film could change the direction of my career. From being a regular in Varma's films (Jungle, Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya, Company, Darna Mana Hai and now Main Madhuri…), Yadav has worked in other productions too like Chandni Bar, The Hero, Maine Dil Tujhko Diya and the latest laugh-riot Hungama. "I think I have been very fortunate to have not been typecast in any particular category. I have never taken any film or role for granted. To me, har role sabse bada prayog hai. Besides, people have always seen me in different roles from negative to a village bumpkin to a pimp to plain comic and they have even accepted me in each of them so that's a big thing for an actor like me who feels more confident of taking any new role, any unusual character."

While Rajpal Yadav certainly hopes Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon works at the box-office, another reason why he's optimistic is "If this works, then probably a new phase of my career would start. Actors like Amitabh Bachchan have their own 'highways' on the road of success, mera ek chhota flyover to bane." Amen!
