He's managed to get Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor on screen after 30 years in his very first directorial venture, DO DOONI CHAAR. Catch director Habib Faisal in conversation with our correspondent as he speaks about what transpired the film, getting Rishi and Neetu Kapoor on board and more.
How did the idea of this film come about? It all happened when Tata Motors launched the idea of a small car (Nano). There were numerous articles in newspapers about bike owners who desired to be car owners. I realised that everyone wanted to own a car and thats when I started to work on this story.
Why the film is titled DO DOONI CHAAR?
'Justice isn't done to Rishi Kapoor's talent.'
The film is about a family of four people and their journey from a two wheeler to a car. There are many people who do things the wrong way. They only believe in shortcuts. For them it's do dooni paacch. But my characters in the film do all things in the right way and for them do dooni is char and not paanch.
Why is your film based in Delhi? I am from Delhi. I'm fascinated by the city. So, I had an idea about the characterisations, dialogues and texture of the film. But the story is universal. It is about dreams and aspirations. Everyone will relate to it.
You have managed to get Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor on screen after 30 years. How did you achieve this? I had written SALAAM NAMASTE, JHOOM BARABAR JHOOM and TA RA RUM PUM. So I know a lot of people in the industry. I approached Rishi Kapoor and narrated the film to him. He totally loved the story and agreed to do it. Neetu wasnt ready to listen to the story. After convincing her to listen to the story, she immediately gave her nod.
Did you always have Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor in mind for this film? I didn't have Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor in mind while I was writing the script. It was only when I finished writing the film, I thought they would fit the bill perfectly and approached them.
Do you think Rishi Kapoor didnt get his deserved credit from the industry? I don't think I can answer if he has got the deserved credit or not. Only he can answer that. But I can say that he has not got many films to showcase his talents. He has hundreds of characters in him. He has not been challenged enough. He is a very fine actor. Justice is not done to his talent. I have tried to tap some of his immense talent in DO DOONI CHAAR.
What are your future projects? I have written BAND BAAJA BAARAT, which stars Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh. My next directorial venture will depend on how people react to DO DOONI CHAAR
