More about Pritam|
"I can't afford to be repetitious."
While the nation is Twist-ing and turning Chorbazaari with his latest compositions for Saif-Deepika starrer LOVE AAJ KAL, Pritam says he is capable of giving more. The composer-singer in conversation with our correspondent
'Twist' and 'Chorbazaari' are the latest chart toppers. In fact, almost all of your songs become chartbusters. What makes you click every time?
That's something I too am surprised of! (Laughs) It was not an easy journey for me to Bollywood and even more difficult to make it to the top. As for 'clicking every time' I think it's because every time before composing a new song, I clean my mental plate and try to look at the situation (given by the director) from a fresh perspective. One thing I know for sure, if I have to survive in this industry, I can't afford to be repetitious.
What made you blend the Nagin tune with the Twist song?
Since the storyline of LOVE AAJ KAL shuttles between past and present generations, we
(director Imtiaz Ali, lyricist Irshad Kamil and Pritam) wanted a song that will be a Gen-Y hip-hop, but also have a tinge of yesteryear's peppy music and lyrics (like 'Twist”). We considered three songs-this Nagin one, Leke Pehla Pehla Pyaar and Jhumka Gira Re. Finally, we zeroed on the Nagin hook.
"I can't afford to be repetitious."
Now you have two hits with Imtiaz- JAB WE MET and LOVE AAJ KAL...
(Interrupts)...and I wish we will work in more films together in future. I really enjoy working with Imtiaz...he is a cool guy. He never interferes in my work...in fact, not only me, but he has full faith in his team. Like, initially in LOVE AAJ KAL, there were only five songs and I felt there should be at least two more to do justice to a fantastic film like this. And, Imtiaz was at once open to my suggestion. Thus we came up with 'Aaj din chadheya' and 'Aahun Aahun'.
What goes behind composing 'Kuke Kuke' song in LIFE PARTNER?
Just had to keep in mind that the heroine (Genelia D'souza) is supposed to sing the song in her besura (cracked) voice...and the guys (Fardeen Khan and Govinda) will try to balance the weird situation with their 'good singing'. It's a fun number...and I thought to present the besura part in a way that it won't be hard on ears....and thankfully, this part became the USP of the song.
There are times when people do notice Indianised version of western tunes in your songs; say for example 'Mauja hi mauja'...
...and despite this fact, these songs become chartbusters. I think this is the best answer to your question.

So, what's next after LOVE AAJ KAL and LIFE PARTNER?
Immediately, I have to give at least two months of time to my wife to ensure my 'Love' remains intact 'Aaj' as well as 'Kal' with my 'Life Partner' (smiles). At the same time, I need to spend time with myself and introspect my music.
Now, what does that mean?
Means, I have to go through, evaluate myself as a musician, go through what are the areas of music that is still untouched in my songs, etc.
And what about bagging most of the big banner films in 2009-10?
Oh yes! This year itself there's a Punjabi number in Yash Raj's DIL BOLE HADIPPA, three scores in Venus' DE DANA DAN, Mukesh Bhatt's TUM MILE and Tips' AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI. Next year, there's David Dhawan's HOOK YA CROOK, Vipul Shah's ACTION REPLAY, Tips' TOH BAAT PAKKI and Parmeet Sethi's diectorial debut with Shahid Kapoor under Yash Raj banner.
