"In HORROR STORY I am not selling stardom, I am selling fear"
Vikram Bhatt, who has been making horror films since a while now, is back with yet another horror film, HORROR STORY. This time he'll be donning the producer's hat for HORROR STORY, which is directed by Ayush Raina. Catch the filmmaker as he speaks about the film, his fascination for horror and more.
What is HORROR STORY about?
HORROR STORY is a story that revolves around seven youngsters who challenge each other to spend a night at the infamous hotel in the heart of the city. Little did they know that their idea of fun will turn out to be the most horrendous night of their lives, rather, the last night of their lives. I got this idea when I was shooting for RAAZ 3 at the same hotel. The place is abandoned since a long time and as soon as I entered this hotel I was scared myself. So I thought of making a film on the same.
Why are you not directing HORROR STORY?
Because I was directing CREATURE which is India's first 3D creature film.
Also my company is making seven-eight films in a year so it's not possible for me to direct all the film.
'Right from childhood I had a thing for occult.'
Did you give any inputs to the director Ayush Raina? Were there any creative differences?
No. Ayush knew what he wanted and he is good at his work.
Have horror films become your comfort zone?
Right from childhood I had a thing for occult. I used to read a lot about occult and when my friends or cousins used to come home I used to tell them ghost stories. I always had this ability to scare people since I was a kid, but somehow never got the opportunity to use it. But then RAAZ happened and it changed everything and then there was no looking back. It is something I love to do.
Why don't you work with big stars? Is it because horror films don't require big stars?
In HORROR STORY I am not selling stardom, I am selling fear so I don't need a big star cast. All I wanted was actors. For example, CHENNAI EXPRESS, no doubt Rohit Shetty is a good director but the stardom of Shahrukh Khan helped the film a lot. Like if I would have made ANKUR ARORA MURDER CASE with bigger stars then I guess it would have done better at the box office, as it helps in getting the audience but for HORROR STORY the story will speak for itself.
This film doesn't have any sexual content. Do you feel a certain section of the audiences, who are expecting that, will be disappointed?
All of my horror films have done well at the box office. Without audience how can they do well? There are audiences for all kind of films. Whatever films we make we should be honest with the genres of film we are making. Besides romance and action, I guess audience should get their doze of horror as well. Also, people who come to watch horror film come to theaters to get scared and not to watch sex.
Will we see you directing or producing any other genre films apart from horror?
'There are audiences for all kind of films.'
There are lots of stuff we are planning but still nothing finalized.
You have said that HORROR STORY is the scariest Bollywood film made in Bollywood. Is that a publicity stunt?
No no, it's a fact. Why should I lie to the audiences? If I lie to them for one film, they will come to theaters for once, but then they will not trust me and will never come for my films. It should be like audiences should agree with me or else at least see the attempt and hard work.
What are your upcoming films?
As of now I am directing CREATURE which is India's first creature film.
Can you tell us a bit about Creature?
It is India's first 3D creature film. It's more on the lines of JURASSIC PARK and ANACONDA. Bipasha is playing the lead in the film. That's all I can reveal right now.
