APARNA SEN |
| Probably having wearied of waiting for the public release of her last film, THE JAPANESE WIFE, Aparna Sen has announced her new venture on a topic that concerns us all now -recession. Sen's new film would be a celluloid representation of how the economic meltdown impacts on relationships. Our correspondent speaks to the filmmaker.
What happened to THE JAPANESE WIFE? It is complete and ready for release with the producers and it is left to them to release the film. I do not know anything more except that my job is over and I am waiting along with the others to see the film released in theatres across the country.

"Konkona keeps poking me to make a film with her..." | And so the new film? No director waits for his last film to release to set hands on a new one. Creativity is a continuous process and funding is all that sometimes poses a block. Once I had written the story, I felt it would be right to cast two good actors in two main roles. So, it struck me that Konkona and Madhavan would be good for two major characters as both are powerful performers. The film is yet to get a title.
You are acting in the film too, we hear? Yes. I play a psychiatrist who counsels two characters who approach her separately with their problems. I do not wish to give the story away but let us say that it is about a couple in a live-in relationship that faces stormy weather due to the recession. It is mainly about how three relationships are hit hard by the recession and how the psychiatrist tries to counsel them. My relationship with these two main characters is at two different levels.
Why Konkona and Madhavan? Konkona keeps poking me to make a film with her in a major role despite her busy routine in Mumbai. Madhavan, I know, is a good actor and he agreed at once adding that he would adjust his dates to be in my film because he is honoured with the offer and my producers are happy with my choice.
Who is producing the film? Rose Valley Productions has been keen to make a film with me. They were impressed with the story and I am happy because I think they can also handle distribution well. They have already worked with noted filmmakers like Rituparno Ghosh and Gautam Ghose and are ready to lay out the budget of Rs.1.5 crore. Actually, it was Rose Valley that suggested Madhavan because they felt he would invest the film with freshness as the audience has already seen Konkona and Rahul together.
Are you happy with your husband Kalyan Roy's performance in his acting debut in ANTAHEEN? I am thrilled. I never felt he would be so good and nor did he for that matter because this is the very first time he was acting, and that too, in front of the camera. The press has given him rave reviews and of course I am happy.
