After exploring different shades of his on-screen 'bad boy' image, Emraan Hashmi turns painter in his forthcoming horror flick RAAZ-THE MYSTERY CONTINUES. Catching up with the actor over ghosts, painting and of course, kisses...
RAAZ-THE MYSTERY CONTINUES is your first horror film. Do you personally enjoy horror films? Very much. I was addicted to horror films since the age of seven-eight. In fact, I preferred horror films to masala ones and the liking still continue. It is a great thing to watch a horror film - first you watch it and then you are so scared that you need someone to escort you even to the loo.
Do you believe in ghost? Yes, I am a believer. Though I have not seen a ghost myself, but I heard many real-life stories from friends that are enough to chill my spines. I am scared of ghosts and darkness.
CHECK OUT: Emraan is skeptical about supernatural powers and beliefs
This is a sequel to Bipasha Basu-Dino Morea starrer RAAZ. So, is it the continuation of the earlier story or something different? It's a completely different story altogether. The film could have been called anything. But RAAZ became so popular after its release that we decided to stick to the same old name just for the sake of marketing.
Tell us something about your character in the film. I play Prithvi, who is a painter with a boon to see the future. Or you may say whatever he paints turns to reality. One day he paints an unknown girl (Kangna Ranaut) who has a life threat. He sets out to seek the girl, who turns out to be a supermodel. He tries to protect her life and this sets the story rolling. Basically it's a conflict within the believer and the non-believer self within us. Oh, before you ask, there are no kisses for me in the film.
We heard you took painting lessons to make your character look real? Yes. I started a crash course more on a painter's body language than painting from artist Shailesh Achrekar. But gradually I became interested in painting and still continue to do it. Trust me, painting reduces tension and helps you to collect your mind at the end of the day.
Some time back you said the entire experience of shooting for RAAZ had been too strenuous for you... And I still stick to what I said. The director Mohit Suri wanted to portray me as a character with lean physique. But I was pretty fat at that time. Cutting so much flab within a short span of time was too painful.
How did you do it...diet or exercise? Both, but mainly I had to work on my diet. I went for a low carb-diet... trust me, they are not at all appealing to your taste buds.
While all Amir and Shah Rukh are all for six or eight-pack abs, don't you too feel the grudge to do that? Not really. I won't do anything just because others are doing it. If that's the demand of a film, I will happily do it. As far as I know, Amir and Shah Rukh too grew pack-abs for their respective films.

The film, we heard, were shot at real locations. True? Suri decided to shoot at original locations to give a real horror feel to the film. And at the end of the day, I ended up so scared that I used to switch on the television in my room before going to sleep.
The recent buzz in the industry is that you are claiming Rs 4-crore a film. Is it because of the fact that you assure box-office success to the producers? Can't give you the exact figure, but all I have to say is, I don't calculate so much. But it's a simple fact that I charge what I feel I deserve. As for the money-back policy, it does not depend only on me. I am lucky that all my films, except my debut film FOOTHPATH, has been commercially successful, if not big hits.
What are your next projects? RAFTER and 26/7 - both are under the banner of Vishesh Films banner.
