She doesn't rule out a future with new-kid-on-the-block Shahid Kapur, but then Kareena Kapoor is also quick to add that she would rather not discuss her personal life.
For quite some time now, Kareena has been romantically linked to Shahid, the son of veteran actor Pankaj Kapur. And in an interview with IANS she admitted that Shahid was "special, very special".
Excerpts:
The entire Page 3 hemisphere is speculating on the nature of your relationship with Shahid Kapur.
Let them. It's good to keep the world guessing. But honestly, clichéd as it may sound, Shahid and I are very close friends. That's it. If you notice even when we spoke about each other on Valentine's Day we didn't come across as your typical couple but two people who love one another's company. We're both young. I've never really worked with a co-star who's the same age as I. I love Shahid's company and I presume he feels the same way. Beyond that who can predict the future, especially when it comes to me?
So do you see a future with him?
Who knows! Seriously I don't think personal lives should be discussed in print. Shahid is a special friend and yes, he's very special. We should leave it at that. Beyond that people should stop peering into my personal life and his, and look at what we're doing on screen.
How do you like working with Shahid?
It's a truly enjoyable experience. Though he's 23 he has the maturity of a 35-year-old. Shahid has an earthy charm. His wonderful smile lights up the screen completely. But beyond the smile, he has super-talent. I've never seen such confidence in a new actor before. Shahid is a natural. When he cries on screen he doesn't need glycerine.
And what a dancer! When we had to dance together for "Fidaa", I was scared. Suddenly I got two very cold left feet. Then I took a deep breath and got on the floor. I guess I managed to hold my own.
After winning so much praise for "Chameli", how does it feel to be winning the awards?
It's like coming home. People had so much patience with me. They kept watching my movies until I came to "Chameli". I'm so grateful to my producer Pritish Nandy and director Sudhir Mishra for the faith they had in me. It's sad that my performance can't be considered in the popular categories. But I knew right from the start that "Chameli" didn't fall in the popular genre, and I was prepared for that. I just feel happy by the critical response that the film and my performance got.
Are you aware of how far you've gone as a performer in "Chameli"?
I was a bit apprehensive about whether I'd pull it off. I knew there were people out there who were waiting for me to fall. I knew they'd celebrate my downfall. So I worked really hard to get it right. Sudhir was with me all the way. And when he says he'd like to work with me again, it's like the best award possible. I've never got so much flowers and messages in my entire career. The other day, an elderly gentleman walked up to me at the Delhi airport and said while he didn't watch films, after seeing my back shot in "Chameli" he told his wife he wanted to see me. He gave me a red rose and wished me all the best. It was a memorable moment.
When someone like Sanjay Bhansali took the effort to praise me after "Chameli" I felt at peace with myself. However, some people felt Kareena Kapoor should've been more crass as a prostitute.
Why must a prostitute always be crass?
That was precisely my point. People didn't see enough sex in "Chameli". But please, every sex worker doesn't have to be played crudely. Look at Waheeda Rehman in "Pyaasa". She played the streetwalker so innocently. That was the quality of performance I was aiming for.
Why do you think your past films didn't do well?
Wrong scripts. But this year, beginning with "Chameli", I've made a conscious effort to be a part of films that highlight me not just as a glamour girl. My roles and look in my next two films, Mani Rathnam's "Yuva" and Govind Nihalani's "Dev", are so different and I've tried to dress and act completely according to character.
I haven't come across such a grand variety of directors in any actors' career!
You're right. By working with Sudhir Mishra, Govind Nihalani and Mani Rathnam within months, I've gone to three different schools in three films. And then there are Dharamesh Darshan and Abbas-Mastan, who are so different from one another and everything else that I'm doing. Does anyone realise how taxing it is for me to slip into so many styles without slipping and falling on my face? I've decided to take a longish break to regain my energy.
What do you mean?
In June I'm taking a long time off from shooting. I need to take a long break to get my hairstyle changed. Nowadays that seems to be a must for giving a good performance! Seriously I need to take a long holiday. I've signed only one film this year, and that's "Hulchal". I wanted to work with Priyadarshan for a long time. He had offered me "Hungama", which I couldn't do.
