A virtual Who's Who of Bollywood was on hand as the Film Producers Guild of India celebrated its golden jubilee by instituting "Apsara" awards that it hoped will set benchmarks by which the industry is measured.

The announcement of the awards was made Monday by the guild, which has 150 invitation-only members who constitute the most powerful and influential luminaries of the film industry. This, it says, makes it the only definitive and representative body of the Indian entertainment industry.

Nominees will be announced May 5 and the awards will be given away May 29. They will cover film and TV shows in Hindi and regional languages.

Awards will be given in 36 categories, including 24 from cinema and 12 from television, both fiction and non-fiction.

"With big-budget blockbusters competing alongside television content and crossover films, entries will be judged on overall quality, content, cinematic brilliance and individual merit," said a guild member.

The awards will be selected through balloting by guild members, who include Amitabh Bachchan, Shyam Bengal, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Kamal Barjatiya and Aamir Khan.

PricewaterHouseCoopers, who audit the Oscars, will perform a similar role for the "Apsara" awards.

Not surprisingly, Bollywood gave the awards a resounding thumbs-up.

Among those who turned up were Farhan Akhtar, Karan Johar, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Nikhil Advani, Rohan Sippy and Ritesh Siddhwani, who rubbed shoulders with veterans like B.R. Chopra, Subhash Ghai, Yash Chopra, Yash Johar, Ramanand Sagar, Manmohan Shetty, Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalani, Bobby Bedi, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Ramesh Sippy, Prakash Mehra, Surinder Kapoor and Mukesh Bhatt.
