In Goa, films are cutting across linguistic divides, thanks to subtitling. Hindi has become understandable to audiences from the South, and even foreigners.

Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Bengali films can be understood by audiences, thanks to the sub-titles. Now Goa is also waking up to the powers of sub-titling.

Goa, and specially Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, has won some praise and criticism over his handling of the IFFI. But the real test will come after the festival ends.

After having spent millions of rupees on the infrastructure, the question is if it can be put to good use for the rest of the year, or even adequately maintained.

Goa's main cultural centre, Kala Academy's toilets are now plush but some said the hi-tech toilets are having problems with maintenance.

Dreary classrooms where students sat on pillows to learn Indian classical musical instruments have been converted into hi-tech viewing rooms, with costly screens and plush sofas.

However, as one participant said: "If Goa wants to compare itself with Cannes, it's got to get at least one-fourth of the way there."
