'Kafan' for Berlin film festival

The Mira Nair-directed "Vanity Fair" was the big attraction of the week. Starring Reese ("Legally Blonde") Witherspoon, Jim Broadbent, Gabriel Byrne and Rhys Ifans, this period-drama adapted from William Thackeray's classic novel is yet another affirmation of India's growing influence in world cinema.
Also released this week was "Khamosh Pani" a winner of 14 international film festival awards including best film (Golden Leopard), Festival Grand Prize, Locarno, best actor (female) and best direction. "Khamosh Pani" stars Kirron Kher and Aamir Malik.
It is based on events that rocked the Indian sub-continent during the Partition in 1947 and the human cost of the drawing of lines. The film has been directed by Karachi-born Sabiha Sumar and brings to light unheard voices from that era. Given the tumultuous times we live in, the film is very relevant.
Another piece of news that cheered cine-buffs was the selection of producer Sushila Bhatia's "Kafan" for the Berlin film festival. The film is based on Munshi Premchand's novel and has been directed by Rishi Jena. Starring Rajpal Yadav, Netra Raghuraman and Sadhu Mehar, it is being produced under the banner of Status Air Vision P. Ltd. Music is by Uday Mazumdar, reports say.
