January 21 to decide the course of the box-office
By Manisha Deshpande
It looks like January 21 will be a crucial day for the industry with four releases lined up on the day, all of them major and big-budgeted, from BLACK, KISNA to BEWAFAA and leading the list is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's BLACK and Subhash Ghai's KISNA, both of which are being eagerly awaited since a long time. While the pre-release countdown for BLACK and its marketing campaign still remains a closely guarded secret, the film is being looked forward to for stellar performances by both Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee, in the roles of a mentor and a deaf blind student. On the other hand, Subhash Ghai's bilingual KISNA (English and Hindi version) attempts to bring back the days of the British Raj through an Indian (Vivek Oberoi) who falls in love with a British girl played by Antonia Bernath. The response to the film is crucial for both Ghai who had last received a setback in YAADEIN and Vivek Oberoi, who was disillusioned with the response to his last release, KYON HO GAYA NA.Meanwhile, there is still a state of uncertainty whether all the four films will indeed make it to on January 21. With January 7 considered to be a jinxed date for release, (a majority of producers are cautious about not releasing their films on the date) the bigger films have been intentionally scheduled for the second week. Despite this, producers like Vashu Bhagnani and Pooja Bhatt, who are confident about their films and don't subscribe to the theory of superstition, have scheduled their films for January 7. One will have to wait and watch whether they manage to break the jinx.
