Delhi gets ready to rock with Bryan Adams

By Neha Tandon, IANS

Deprived of major showbiz events, whether it is an Elton John or a Rolling Stones concert, Delhiites can barely wait to keep their date with rock star Bryan Adams.

The Bryan Adams fever is spreading all over and everyone is catching it.

For hip teenagers, with-it corporate executives and simply those who enjoy a good time, all roads this Saturday will lead to the warm up area of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in this capital where the Canadian singer will rock crowds.

And it will be an evening to remember this winter of 2004 as the singer croons "Summer of `69".

Most of the 25,000 seats, priced at Rs.750 and Rs.500, have been sold out.

"I have been waiting for Bryan Adams to come to Delhi for years," said Gaurav Vij, who works with a multinational company.

"Delhi is always sidelined when such concerts take place, I am so glad that I will finally get to see him live," said Bryan Adams fan Dipti Malhotra.

"I and my friends have been running around for tickets because we don't want to miss the opportunity that comes once in a blue moon," said another fan.

After all Adams -- who sang that ultimate mushy song "Everything I do, I do it for you" from the soundtrack of the film "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" -- himself has been to India twice earlier but has never performed in New Delhi.

His first performance in India was in Mumbai in 1994. He came again in 2001 and gave performances in Bangalore and Mumbai.

Excited Delhiites are not only snapping up tickets, but also Bryan Adams albums, T-shirts and other memorabilia.

"The sales of his albums have suddenly shot up. We are giving a 30 percent discount on his albums and giving away Bryan Adams T-shirts, mousepads. People are buying them like crazy," said a salesperson from Planet M in South Extension, a busy market in the heart of the city.

The concert will showcase a selection of Bryan Adams' award winning hit songs, including "Summer of `69", "Run to you", "18 till I die", "Everything I do", "Please forgive me", "On a day like today" and many more.

And to think that it almost didn't happen!

The Bryan Adams India Live 2004 concert was supposed to take place at a farmhouse, Mittal Gardens, but Delhi Police refused to give permission for the show due to lack of infrastructure and space.

After a few anxious days, however, when nobody was really sure about whether it would happen or not, the concert got the green signal -- after the organisers shifted the venue to the warm-up area of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The stadium itself is out of bounds for such concerts.

"Due to the overwhelming response of die hard Bryan Adams fans in Delhi, there was need to change the venue to the warm-up area of the Nehru stadium," said T. Venkat Vardhan, chief of DNA Networks Pvt. Ltd., the main organisers.

Adams has 10 Grammy Awards to his credit and 12 platinum hits worldwide. He has sold more than 50 million copies and has been number 1 on the charts in more than 30 countries.

He holds the record for the longest running number one single in British music history with his "(Everything I do) I do it for you" number. His greatest hits collection "The Best of Me" released in 1999 has sold over 14 million copies worldwide.

Adams will also give live performances in Bangalore, Colombo, Dubai and Amman in this current tour.

Clearly, the capital is in for a really capital time.
