Haryana wants Madhuri Dixit to pay up
By Jaideep Sarin, IANS
Bollywood star Madhuri Dixit may have never heard a film plot without a signing amount, but the Haryana government wants her to pay for a "plot" allotted to her years ago.
Swept by the charms and desire of Madhuri in 1996 to settle down here, then Haryana chief minister Bhajan Lal allotted her a residential plot in the adjoining town of Panchkula from his discretionary quota.
The actress promptly got Rs.60,000 deposited for the allotment of the plot of land. There has been no news from her ever since.
The Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), the land allotment agency, has now asked the actress to deposit the remaining amount -- nearly Rs.175,000.
Officials say that if she fails to pay up, resumption proceedings for the plot will begin.
The plot, measuring 500 square yards, is located in the picturesque and posh Sector 4 of Mansa Devi complex near here.
Real estate consultants here peg the market value of the property at over Rs.4.5 million.
If the actress pays up even now, the property will not cost her more than Rs.250,000. This includes the interest on the amount outstanding against her.
One notice to the actress at her Mumbai address has come back as "undelivered".
HUDA officials have no idea of the actress' address in Los Angeles where she has settled after marrying a US-based doctor.
HUDA officials say they don't want to be harsh to the actress. They will give her ample opportunity to pay for the plot before initiating further action.
Madhuri was so impressed by the planning and environs of Chandigarh when she came here for the shooting of "Mohabbat" in 1996 that she made known her desire to settle here.
But she never visited the city ever after that.
Movie buffs had gone crazy in the city as the actress and her co-stars shot here for nearly two weeks.
