Filmmaker Nagi Reddy dies


Veteran filmmaker Nagi Reddy, known for his productions like "Ram Aur Shyam", died here Wednesday after a prolonged illness. He was 92.

Reddy is survived by three sons and two daughters.

His family sources said the veteran film producer suffered a stroke six years ago, which left him immobile. He suffered another stroke five months ago and was in hospital for quite some time.

A recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 1987, Reddy produced some 50 films in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

Some of his well-known productions in the 1960s and 1970s included "Julie" and "Ram aur Shyam" in Hindi, "Saukar" and "Maaya Bazar" in Telugu and "Enga Veettu Pillai" in Tamil.

"Meendum Savithri" was the last Tamil film produced by him in 1997. His first Telugu film was in 1949.

Nagi Reddy was the president of the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, Chennai, for four terms. He was twice president of the Film Federation of India, Mumbai.
