Preity Zinta to write for BBC

By Subhash K. Jha, IANS

After winning hearts with her girl-next-door roles in a slew of films, Preity Zinta is now going to try her hand at writing, with a monthly column on life and cinema for

"I've taken on the responsibility and will be putting out my column from next month on whatever topic I please," Preity told IANS.

The perfectionist in Preity is ready to take on the new challenge.

"For me, this column is an opportunity to address any issue, from the prospects of mainstream cinema to why Delhi is no longer safe for women. I can write about Indian culture and... life! But it all depends on how I manage the time for it.

"It's about 700-800 words per column, and that's quite a bit. And I'm not a professional writer. I could punch it out on my laptop. But I prefer to put down my thoughts with a pen on paper. I feel it would be a good opportunity for me to have my say."

After her back-to-back hits "Koi... Mil Gaya" and "Kal Ho Naa Ho", Preity is on top of the world. "I couldn't have hoped for anything better," she said.

Success has brought more roles to her doorstep. But Preity isn't biting the bait.

"I've just completed Farhan Akhtar's 'Lakshya'. I've only one film on hand, and that's Yash Chopra's underproduction film where I play a character unlike any I've done, or am likely to do. That's enough work for me. I agree my hands get full very quickly. But if I've less to hold I can hold it better, isn't it?"

The Mumbai papers and websites are full of the actress signing a new film with the much talked-about "Maqbool" director Vishal Bhardwaj.

The film, "Mantra", is to be produced by Shekhar Kapur. Preity raises a quizzical eyebrow when asked about it.

"Now how did that get out? The reason why I haven't been talking about it is because nothing has been finalised yet.

"The discussions are at a very early stage right now. It's just an idea. But of course I'm doing it, no two ways about it. I was supposed to start my career with a film to be directed by Shekhar Kapur. So, in a way, life has come a full circle."

Preity saw "Maqbool" this week and was impressed by it.

"In 'Mantra', we'll make magic and music together," she dimpled, drawing attention to the director's antecedents as a music composer.
