Box-office's hide and seek
Box-office fortunes are playing hide and seek much like the Indian monsoon. After a couple of some summer blockbusters like "Main Hoon Na" and "Hum Tum," an unsettling silence has descended at the turnstiles and big budget films like "Lakshya" and "Deewar: Lets Bring Home Our Heroes" are struggling to stay on the marquees.
Though all the three big releases in the month of June - "Dev", "Lakshya" and "Deewar" - have found critical acclaim especially for performances by Amitabh Bachchan who was the common factor in all and Hrithik Roshan, they have not set the cash registers ringing.
The first weekend of July was a disappointment for Hindi film views. Neither "Hyderabad Blues 2", Nagesh Kukunoor's sequel to "Hyderabad Blues", nor the quintessential and highly forgettable potboiler "Shikari" found many takers among reviewers.
"Hyderabad Blues 2" was found to be stale and jaded and the lesser said about "Shikari", yet another attempt by star wannabe Jaz Pandher to hit it big, the better.
Bollywood has much on its platter this July. This will be a crucial month for Salman Khan, destiny's favourite whipping boy. In a paradoxical twist of fate, the actor who has many a run-ins with law will essay the role of a cop in "Garv".
Hopefully this will be the last of the surfeit of cop films emerging out of Mumbai for some time to come and Salman will be hard pressed to prove he is the best cop of them all.
After "Garv", Salman will be seen romancing Priyanka Chopra in "Mujhse Shaadi Karoge". The film also stars Akshaye Kumar. Salman's most promising role could be in "Phir Milenge" where he plays the part of an AIDS victim, a first for the Hindi film industry.
The other highlights of the month will be Tusshar Kapoor's "Gayab" based on the concept of invisibility and Mahesh Manjrekar's "Rakht". Produced by Cine Blitz Productions and Popcorn Motion Pictures, the film dealing with the supernatural stars Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Abhishek Bachchan, Dino Morea, Bipasha Basu, Amrita Arora, Neha Dhupia, Himanshu Malik and Yana Gupta in an item number.
