Deepa Mehta shoots in Colombo with John, Lisa
By Subhash K. Jha, IANS
Deepa Mehta's troubled project "River Moon" is finally being shot in Colombo with an all-new and rather surprising cast of John Abraham and Lisa Ray.
When Rahul Khanna who was Mehta's original choice for the male lead opted out, Mehta flew down to Mumbai to audition several possible candidates for the male lead, including Sanjay Suri.
When a friend recommended John's name, Mehta met him warily. "But things fell into place the minute we met in Mumbai. I knew I had found the character I was looking for."
Searching for the female lead in the woman-oriented film proved more problematic. Kareena Kapoor was the perfect choice. Mehta met her last year. Kareena was finalised for the female lead. But it all fell apart when this year Kareena's dates created a problem.
Several other leading ladies, including Rani Mukherjee and Raima Sen, were considered. Finally Mehta has opted for Lisa who played the lead opposite Rahul Khanna in Mehta's "Bollywood/Hollywood".
Lisa apparently fits the role in keeping with the cosmopolitan international audience at which "River Moon" will be targeted.
John, who flew off to Colombo after a long shooting schedule for Sanjay Gadhvi's "Dhoom" in Goa, is greatly excited about "River Moon".
It's his first chance at international success and also a much-needed makeover after the three back-to-back non-happening films "Aetbaar", "Paap" and "Lakeer".
While "Dhoom" features John as villain, "River Moon" casts him almost as a saint.
