Who will bring Abhishek, Amitabh together first
By Subhash K. Jha, IANS
Several filmmakers have tried to bring Amitabh Bachchan and son Abhishek together in a film, but failed.
Now the two Bachchans are finally coming together in not one but two huge projects - "Ranveer" and "Sarkaar" - that will be launched in the next few months.
Interestingly, Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan are cast as father and son in both the films.
In Raj Kumar Santoshi's "Ranveer", the father and son will play an entrepreneur and a unionist respectively who constantly clash on ideological grounds.
Says Amitabh: "We've decided to revive our company with a film featuring Abhishek and me. Doesn't it make business and creative sense? We zeroed in on Santoshi because I worked with him in 'Khakee'. I love his creative talents and working style.
"We've chosen DMS Films (Keshu Ramsay) to be our partners on this venture. I've worked with them on 'Khakee', and am very happy with them."
Adds Santoshi: "The shooting of 'Ranveer' will begin in mid-June. If everything goes well, we'll wrap up shooting by the end of October. We plan to release the film either in the last week of January 2005 or February."
In "Ranveer", Amitabh indulgently takes the backseat.
"Abhishek and I come together for the first time in a film in 'Ranveer'. Earlier, we've done am automobile ad together. 'Ranveer' will feature Abhishek in the more prominent role. It'll be a story about father-son conflict."
Sanjay Dutt, who's close to both the Bachchans, will play an out-and-out villain in "Ranveer".
So where does that leave "Sarkaar", Ram Gopal Varma's ambitious adaptation of "The Godfather"?
Varma's film will undoubtedly revolve around the senior Bachchan. This is his chance to do a Marlon Brando.
But says Abhishek: "Please don't compare my father with Brando. It belittles both the actors who are big in their own fields. Even if my father plays 'The Godfather', he'll do so in his own way."
In "Sarkaar", Abhishek will undoubtedly have a less pivotal role to play. Though Abhishek in the Al Pacino role will be important to the plot, "Sarkaar" will revolve around the senior Bachchan's character.
As Varma is currently busy with the last lap of "Naach", it's unlikely to be completed before Santoshi's film.
