Surprise for Abhishek Bachchan fans
By Subhash K. Jha, IANS
After "Run" and "Yuva", Abhishek Bachchan completes a hat- trick of releases with his surprise appearance in Kunal Kohli's "Hum Tum".
Quietly and without anyone being the least aware of the surprise appearance, Abhishek shot for his very special role in the film as Rani Mukherjee's husband.
This is the second film in two weeks where Abhishek plays Rani's husband.
Apparently Abhishek's decision to do a guest appearance, his second in a row after the item song in Mahesh Manjrekar's "Rakht", is prompted by his close relations with the Yash Chopra banner.
The banner has not just produced some of the senior Bachchan's most memorable movies from "Deewaar" to "Mohabbatein" but also given Abhishek a nifty role in the Yashraj production "Dhoom" where Abhishek plays the hero to John Abraham's villain.
After Abhishek's rabblerousing role in "Yuva" last week it remains to be seen how audiences react to his new power-packed flash appearance in "Hum Tum".
There have been earlier instances of carefully concealed surprise appearances by big stars, like Preity Zinta in Sunny Deol's "Dillagi", Aishwarya Rai in Dharmesh Darshan's "Mela", Juhi Chawla in Kundan Shah's "Kabhi Han Kabhi Na" and, of course, Raj Kapoor who appeared fleetingly in a train in his own production "Boot Polish" decades ago.
Abhishek's surprise appearance in "Hum Tum" is all the more significant in the light of the fact that the film marks Saif Ali Khan's maiden effort to establish himself as a romantic lead.
So far Saif has had tremendous success as a supporting actor. Will the Abhishek-Saif combination work in "Hum Tum"?
The two have been signed to play off against each other as the two male leads in Rohan Sippy's next film.
Interestingly, after a hat-trick of Abhishek Bachchan starrers in three weeks, we'll now be treated to a similar situation vis-à-vis the senior Bachchan.
It will begin June 11 with Govind Nihalani's hard-hitting "Dev", followed by Farhan Akhtar's "Lakshya" June 18 and Gaurang Doshi-Milan Luthria's "Deewaar: Let's Bring The Heroes Home" June 25.
It is a crucial time indeed for the Bachchans at the movies.
