Zee calls off distribution venture with Rajshri
By Manisha Deshpande
The distribution alliance between Zee and Rajshri that took off on an ambitious note with Vijaypat Sanghania's WOH TERA NAAM THA in January this year, has been called off at the behest of Zee after it suffered severe losses in all the films it released. The two released as many as eight films jointly among them being LAKSHYA, YUVA and Boney Kapoor's KYON HO GAYA NA, which was the last film, with Zee procuring films and Rajshri using its distribution expertise in the market to release them.
According to Nittin Keni, C.E.O., film production and exhibition in Zee, the final blow was the failure of KYON HO GAYA NA. "We decided after the film that we could not afford to take any more losses. The whole of last year was very bad for us in the distribution business."
Zee is now looking at the distribution of films in the overseas territory. Recently it released MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI, for which the business was fairly satisfying according to Keni.
On the other hand, Keni has disassociated himself from 'Indira Gandhi', the film for which he had signed Manisha to play the title role. "I am not sure whether the trust that had been set up for the film is going ahead with it. But I have disassociated myself from it," Keni says.
