Suneel Darshan is my father figure- Upen Patel
By R Manishaa, Bollywood Trade News Network
Upen Patel has had two releases to his credit so far and has twice experienced the pre-release phase of nervousness and excitement when actors eagerly await the initial reactions to their films but none of it is comparable to the release of his latest film SHAKALAKA BOOM BOOM. “It is the D-day for me because I am counting on the film to change the way I am perceived as an actor. It showcases my acting talent to the hilt and is like a big breakthrough for me,” says Patel. The film has him playing the role of one of the two superstars who vie with each other for the numero uno position. “It depicts the power-games that stars play to make it to the top,” he smiles reticent to comment on whether his character holds any semblance to a real life star. Moreover, the making of the film saw him and director Suneel Darshan share a terrific rapport, which led Suneel to sign him for two of his forthcoming projects. “Suneel has come to acquire the place of a father figure in my life. Working in SHAKALAKA… has been my best working experience so far. We share an excellent tuning and I am looking forward to working with him in more projects,” he says.
He is also glad that he is part of two very popular songs in the film, both of which have become a hot rage among the audiences. “I think songs play an important role in an actor’s success and I have been fairly lucky to have got some of the best of songs in all my releases so far,” he says.
There has been talk that he was not very happy about his portrayal in NAMASTEY LONDON and the way his minuscule role finally shaped up in the film. However Upen prefers to keep a guarded silence on the issue. “It is entirely the director’s prerogative to portray an actor the way he wants at the end of the day and I have no complaints on that accord,” he says, making it a point to add, “I know my character could have had a better footage than what it shaped up on screen. Thankfully, the critics gave me good reviews for my performance in the film,” he says.
Moreover he doesn’t see any cause for worry with the promising line-up of films that he has in the offing. “I have managed to bag some of the best films including one film each with Tips, Venus, Ramesh Sippy and two films each with Abbas-Mustan and Suneel Darshan. Besides, all of them have well-etched characters,” he enthuses.
Ask him about the casanova image that he has come to acquire and he simply smiles. “I am quite enjoying that image. I think I have come to acquire the lover boy flirtatious image because of the roles that I have essayed so far. I may not be the same in real life but I am okay with the image,” he quips.
