My respect for audience has shot up- Kay Kay Menon
By Swati R Chaudhary, Bollywood Trade News Network
Life couldn’t get any rosier for Kay Kay Menon. BLACK FRIDAY finally saw the light of the day on 9th February 2007 and since then; praises have been bestowed upon him from all quarters for his outstanding performance in the film. And if that was not enough, he has everyone swooning over his spontaneous, impromptu dancing skills (sajnaji vari vari) in his upcoming film HONEYMOON TRAVELS…
The man is straight! He puts his point across without hemming or hawing! His decision to act in a film is influenced by the ‘script’, ‘director’, his ‘responsibility’ towards the film and ‘money’. A combination of ALL of this and you’re bound to get a nod from Kay Kay. Over to the talented actor…
The narrative had me in splits… When director Reema Kagti (HONEYMOON TRAVELS PVT. LTD) narrated the script to me I knew that the film had a certain standard that was far superior to the rest. The narrative had me in splits. I knew I had to this film. I left feeling good at the end of the narration and this feel-good-factor prompted me to say yes.
USP of HONEYMOON TRAVELS… There are 6 couples on a package honeymoon tour to Goa. The film deals with marriage and relationships in a weird unique way. The sense of humour is also weird but it’s not slapstick comedy. I guess that’s the USP of the film. The manner in which Reema has dealt with relationships is unusual. It says ‘mast raho’ that is to look at life in a positive way and keep smiling!
Partho is a nerdy husband… Raima (Sen) and I play a Bengali couple. My character Partho is a nerdy, uptight husband who likes to dominate, however he changes due to certain circumstances. The element of humour has been retained throughout the film.
Sajnaji vari vari… The script essentially required this dance sequence. When Farah (Khan) was choreographing the song she just let me be. I just freaked out! I find aerobic dancing very boring to watch though I have no problems with it lekin agar aap dance kay saath abhinay kar sakte hai then it becomes very interesting and Govinda is one actor who can do it!
I don’t see directors as ‘male’ or ‘female’… For me a director’s gender is not the criterion. It’s immaterial since its ones talent that matters ultimately. Even a male director could be dumb so it really doesn’t matter. This is the second time I’ve worked with a female director (after DANSH) and Reema was just brilliant. Infact majority of HONEYMOON TRAVELS…team was an all women’s unit (laughs) be it my director, EP, cinematographer, costume department etc. It’s just that everyone filmmaker has a different way of looking at things.
Its’ not a porn film… Raima and I have a kissing scene in the film. There’s a lot of hype regarding that particular scene. I’ve done love making scenes in many of films like CORPORATE and HAZAARON KHWAISHEIN AISI. If people are going to see the film for that reason, then they are in for a disappointment coz it’s not a steamy sizzling kiss. It’s not like we are making a porn film!
No ego hassles, only masti… When you’re working with a bunch of hassle free people you’re bound to enjoy. We all really gelled with each other. Even someone like Shabana Azmiji, that is someone of her stature, had to be an extra sometimes but there were no ego issues whatsoever. Not only did we enjoy shooting on sets, but we also indulged into lots of dumb charades and word building games after pack up.
I am happy for Shilpa Shetty… Shilpa has done us proud. I am really happy for her. We shot for Anurag Basu’s METRO before she left for UK. Anurag has his own set of audience but Shilpa’s Big Brother victory will definitely draw the overseas audience. METRO is about the trails and tribulations in relationships. It focuses on the fast paced city life and its consequent repercussions on people.
SHUNYA revolves around psychosis of… My forthcoming film SHUNYA revolves around psychosis of a successful sportsperson. It’s based on a sportsman’s life who reaches the pinnacle of success and how he deals with the challenges he faces, how he gets tempted to ad offers etc. It is not based on a ‘particular’ sportsman (referring to cricketer Azharuddin Shah) but any successful sports person. It could be anyone! If not an actor, I would’ve been a sportsman. I enjoy playing all sports.
DRONA belongs to… I’m doing Goldie Behl’s DRONA starring Abhishek Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra. It belongs to the ‘action fantasy comic book genre’. As for my character, hum mainstream commercial cinema main hamesha villain he hote hai (laughs).
Hats off to the audience… My respect for audience has grown post BLACK FRIDAY. BLACK FRIDAY is a director’s film. I had a couple of reactions when the film released. I am extremely proud of our audience and my respect for them has shot up. A film like this being approved by people is a healthy sign for Indian cinema. It only goes to prove that all kinds of cinema can co-exist. Hats off to the audience!
