FROM MOHINI TO CHANDRAMUKHI TO...

It was about twenty one years ago that a girl danced into the hearts of the nation with her ‘Ek do teen’ number and continued to make strides with the grace and aplomb about which there are no striking parallels. Madhuri Dixit could rule over the hearts of the nation for near about twenty years, as she was an exceptionally versatile dancer, and an accomplished kathak exponent who gave a glimpse of her dance prowess in the opening song of TEZAAB and walked into the sunset of her first innings with ‘Hum Par yeh kisne hara rang dala’ in DEVDAS.
Now she is trying to make a come back after remaining in hibernation for more than four years, to start a family and it would be a matter of academic interest as to how she would be faring in her second innings. This is on account of the fact that in stark contrast to what happens in Hollywood; in Bollywood once motherhood has been experienced by a heroine it is very difficult for her to claim the mantle once again, while in Hollywood it hardly makes any difference. Probably this is owing to the fact that till the heroine gets married she is the dream queen of all the viewers but once the dream is shattered they just do not want the heroine to rule their hearts once again. Sridevi, Juhi Chawla, Karisma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon etc., all being the prime examples. Even a Nargis or a Vyjantimala could not hold the same away with the audience once they tried to make a come back. So they either started working in home production or turned their focus to regional films.
The case of Madhuri Dixit seems to be slightly different, as but for a Sridevi none of the actors are of the dancers of the same category to which Madhuri Dixit belongs, as she had demonstrated in DIL TO PAAGAL HAI with Karisma and with Aishwarya in DEVDAS. And she could be the only heroine who gyrated with an Amitabh Bachchan and a Govinda with an aplomb, which no other heroine got an opportunity to do the encore.
And she was the first lady who became muse of M.F. Hussein and in his obsession for Madhuri he made a film trying to cover all the artistic nuances of Madhuri in MEENAXI, it is altogether a different matter that by that time Madhuri had hung up her boots, so she could not act in the exposition of Hussein.
No wonder, for an actor of such accomplishment, it had to be a Producer of the caliber of Yash Chopra who could provide her a platform for re-launch of a career. The re-launch would be watched with quite a lot of interest as it would be a re-launch of an actress at forty years of age, which does not have parallel more so as a lead actor.
