Actor Politicians or Politician Actors
By Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network
Dharmendra has started shooting for JOHNY GADDAR, Vinod Khanna's RISK is going to hit the screen soon and Govinda has been able to make a come back with BHAGAM BHAG. Hema Malini had a BABUL, which was released recently. But what about the constituencies that they represent, the parliamentary constituencies which has selected them and sent them to the Parliament to fight for the cause of the people.
Why does the actor, and that more so of the modern era who on one count or the other after becoming the politician is not able to carve a niche for himself or herself in the august body of the country the Parliament and returns back to movies with a vengeance. Amitabh Bachchan hung his boots after a short flirtation with politics. Shatrughan Sinha has slowly gravitated to the margins of the politics. In fact in case of Govinda and Dharmendra the electorates had to put up a notice saying that there representatives have absconded. Govinda was virtually stopped in his steps from proceeding to South Africa for the shooting of the film.
Contrast the situation with the illustrative peers in Hollywood, Ronald Reagan became the President, Arnold Schwarznegger has emerged as one of the most successful governors of California, George Clooney is also having his political ambitions.
Then what is it that lacks in the present day actor politicians, which does not provide them the kind of respect that their predecessors could get, take for example Nargis, or Shabana Azmi or Sunil Dutt for that matter. These actor politicians when they were given the responsibility to become the politicians took the vocation seriously and made a success out of it.
It seems to work as the double-edged sword. The sheer novelty of an actor coming to the doorsteps of an ordinary voter to garner votes, on its own sweeps the electorate of his feet, and the victory is a near certainty. But after being elected, the honeymoon starts getting over, and when the brass tracks have to be taken care of, the actors' starts getting doubts. The limelight, to which he is accustomed, has to be shared with 550 other representatives, as he is one amongst them, and he has been accustomed to being pampered to hog the limelight.
And to get out of this vortex, becomes a major problem area, and it is what gets to the actors, and those who adjust make a successful career out of politics. After all, it is a transition from a make believe world or a surreal world to a world where one is made accountable for the actions and passing the bucks does not help. Then the machinations of the political kind have also to be taken care off, which is a mountain difficult to surmount.
But this does not mean that the actors should run away from it. After all the electorate reposes so much faith in them by electing them, and if they are able to deliver even an iota of what is expected, they can make a career out of it. Compared to a politician an actor still has better credentials, as he is not interested in the spoils of the office. So it is high time more actors step into politics, and become the voice of the nation, as also of the industry because if a Ronald Reagan having less fan following can lead US of A for two successive terms why not an actor from Hindi film industry lead the country. The lead has already been provided by the South Indian film industry, the question only is that the actor politicians have to become politician actors, as a Budhdhadev Bhattacharya, dons the grease paint but he is serving the state. Or for that matter Karunanidhi, who continues to write the dialogues for the films but runs the state as well. If it is a baptism by fire, so be it, the initial flames may burn the skin, but after that it is the river of gold, which beckons and those who are vested with this responsibility should not shrug away from it, for the sake of country.
