Is Bollywood smiling with India's opening match loss to Bangladesh?
This is what can be sensed in the weekend gone by, though the whispers are still heard in private corners. India's loss in their first match means that the cricket team's entry to the Super-8 is now on shaky grounds with a final outcome that could go in any direction. And God forbid, if India indeed doesn't reach into the next level, it would set the stage for Bollywood to have an open run at the theaters.
For months there had been speculations about theatres running empty in the month of March and April due to the cricket fever catching up. But in case India's campaign ends on a premature note, it would mean number of open weeks for Bollywood to bring out movies.
Also, there could be widespread flurry of releases due to sudden availability of slots. As of now, though March is reasonably filled up with THE NAMESAKE and NAMASTE LONDON confirmed for March 23 and March 30 surely bringing on BIG BROTHER, DELHII HEIGHTS, SAY SALAAM INDIA, April doesn't have much planned for release.
While PROVOKED and SHAKALAKA BOOM BOOM are the only two films coming on April 06, the next three weeks just have a solitary release each in the form of EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL, KYA LOVE STORY HAI and TA RA RUM PUM.
An early exit from the Cup would mean sudden rush of films coming in the month of April. Which producer would take the bait first?
