The last couple of years have seen a new trend emerging with small budgeted multiplex targeted movies succeeding at the turnstile. The ball was set rolling with the likes of KHOSLA KA GHOSLA, HONEYMOON TRAVELS PVT. LTD, and BHEJA FRY. The pattern continued with DIL DOSTI ETC. And the latest entrant is Manish Acharya's LOINS OF PUNJAB PRESENTS.
This English language NRI project (ignored by most sections of the print media), featuring Shabana Azmi, Ayesha Dharkar and Darshan Jariwala, has turned out to be a reasonably profitable venture for its makers, mainly due its multiplex run in the metros. The movie which netted an almost identical 1-crore each during its first two weeks, followed it up with another 70 lakhs in the third.
Do we see a parallel/ancillary Bollywood production unit emerging, one which does not depend on big names to succeed? Only time will tell!
