SOCHA NA THA, AHISTA AHISTA, HONEYMOON TRAVELS PVT. LTD., EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL and now MANORAMA SIX FEET UNDER. 5 films. 5 directors. And each of them being a debutant.
Abhay Deol could well be the first high profile actor from mainstream cinema who has worked with five unique setups with debutant directors in his first five films. While Imtiaz Ali (who is now gearing up with JAB WE MET) made his directorial debut with SOCHA NA THA, Shivam Nair was the man behind AHISTA AHISTA. Even though neither of the two films worked at the box office, Abhay was noticed and appreciated.
Abhay tasted his first success when Reema Kagti, an erstwhile assistant to Farhan Akhtar, came up with HONEYMOON TRAVELS PVT. LTD. Sanjay Khanduri too saw rave reviews and a decent success with EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL which is currently doing tremendous in DVD circuits.
For Abhay too, it was a shot in the arm since he got his first solo success and that too in a film which defied stereotypes and redefined the art of film making at many place.
Now Navdeep Singh holds the baton for MANORAMA SIX FEET UNDER which has again received rave reviews wherever it has been screened in festival circuits. Releasing on 21st September, it shows Abhay Deol in a new light altogether.
With MANORAMA SIX FEET UNDER which also stars Gul Panag, Raima Sen, Sarika and Vinay Pathak, Abhay would be approaching close towards hitting a six as his next film MERIDIAN also has a debutant director at the helm. Venod Mitra is the man running the show for this dramatic thriller that has an interesting cast comprising of Abhay, Irfan Khan, Arjun Rampal, Raima Sen and Konkona Sen Sharma.
