PVR Pictures is all set to release Amitabh Bachchan's first English film - THE LAST LEAR in Indian Cinemas. The decision takes forward a tradition of successfully distributing offbeat Indian made English films like LOINS OF PUNJAB, PARZANIA and BEING CYRUS that PVR Pictures has established over the last few years.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Rituporno Ghosh, whose mastery with dramatic narrative has been entrenched in the past with films like UNISHE APRIL, TITLI and RAINCOAT in the past, THE LAST LEAR wowed movie buffs at the Toronto film Festival amongst others. The film sets itself apart with the number of innovations that it holds.
It's the first ever-English Film for Amitabh Bachchan, as well as Priety Zinta and Arjun Rampal. A strong cast of performers like Divya Dutta, Shefali Shah and Prosenjit Chatterjee also supports it. THE LAST LEAR is also the first Indian film that explores Shakespeare's influences on actors' lives- a theme that has inspired many Hollywood stars like Al Pacino (Looking for Richard), Sir Peter O Toole (Venus) and Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love) to turn over a new corner in their careers.
This will be PVR's second initiative with Planman Motion Pictures having previously distributed MITHYA.
Shot in pristine West Bengal locales that carry doses of the Raj nostalgia, THE LAST LEAR is a proud feather in PVR Pictures' multifaceted cap of distribution. Supporting quality cinema being its motto, PVR Pictures will support the film with, prints across India. Speaking on the strategy for this unique film, Gaurav Verma, the distribution head for PVR Pictures in India said ''We would be consciously aggressive, with the film in the first week, targeting the key centers and hope to go wider from the second week, once the word of mouth spreads. Also, Mr. Bachchan in the main role would automatically enable a wider release''
THE LAST LEAR releases in India on September 12th.
