Return of CHANAKYA in contemporary times
December 20, 2008 7:04:37 PM IST Joginder Tuteja, Bollywood Trade News Network
Paresh Rawal filmed his famous play MAHARATHI in a namesake movie and released it earlier this year. Now Manoj Joshi, his counterpart from the world of stage, too is bringing his own CHANAKYA back. However, filming for the play may just have to wait for a while as currently he is concentrating on reviving the play that was first staged close to 15 years back.
Says Shakeel Khan [DHAN DHANA DHAN GOAL, LAKSHYA, AHISTA AHISTA], who plays an important role in CHANAKYA, "Though the story is historical, the presentation is such that it transports the audience to an era which is pretty much contemporary. In India, we are facing times where there is a lot of turmoil both inside and outside our border. The play looks at the struggle to free the political system of the current mess we are in."
Apparently, the play has been much liked by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi (who has watched it thrice) as well as Laloo Prasad Yadav. Staged in Gujarati as well as Hindi in the decade gone by, there have been more than 400 shows that have been held for CHANAKYA.
"I have literally lived the role,'' says Manoj Joshi who not just directs but also enacts the role of 'Chanakya', "There is no question of me getting tired of playing this role. The man had so many layers to him and I see a fresh perspective every time I step on to the stage.
CHANAKYA stars Sameer Dharmadhikari as Chandragupt. On 12th January, special show would be held in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile there would also be another show for Bollywood actors.
