A WEDNESDAY has made a big impression at the V. Shantaram awards that were announced yesterday. It has won awards in as many as five categories.
While it won the Silver award for the Best Film (producers Shital Bhatia, Anjum Rizvi and Ronnie Screwvala), Neeraj Pandey won the Gold award for the Best Director. Aamir Khan followed with a Silver award in this category for TAARE ZAMEEN PAR while Ashutosh Gowarikar bagged the Bronze for the JODHAA AKBAR.
It was a double whammy for Neeraj Pandey who was also hailed as the Best Debut Director. Others in competition were Aamir Khan (TAARZE ZAMEEN PAR), Mangesh Haldalwe (TINGYA Marathi), KVS Pillai (NOVEL Malayalam) and M Mohanan (KADHA PARAYUMPOL Malayalam).
For Jimmy Sheirgill, it was an ecstatic moment as he got his first award in his 13 year long career that began with MAACHIS. As a Best Artiste in Supporting Role category, he marched ahead of Arjun Rampal (ROCK ON), Ila Arun (JODHAA AKBAR), Tisca Chopra (TAARE ZAMEEN PAR) and Shefali Shah (BLACK & WHITE).
Shree Narayan Singh too bagged an award for using his scissors to the best use while editing A WEDNESDAY.
Though Neeraj Pandey couldn't get an award for Best Writing in A WEDNESDAY, it was surprising to see Naseeruddin Shah not winning the award for the Best Actor. He lost out to Darsheel Safary who won the award for TAARZE ZAMEEN PAR.
The awards have been instituted in the memory of legendary filmmaker late V Shantaram and the function is organized by Rajkamal Academy for cinematic excellence. Now one looks forward to A WEDNESDAY making a mark once the National Awards are announced in 2009. We continue to keep the fingers crossed!
