For the second time in more than a decade, the final accounts of the film industry are not showing a red mark! Believe it or not, but the film industry made an overall profit of Rs. 20 crores in 2007. Although the figure of 20 crore is not at all impressive, it is the second time in last 10 years that the industry has shown profit. The last time that happened (during the last decade) was in 2006.

The success ratio of Bollywood films has always been less than 20 percent. In 2007, the percentage of successful films was just 11.1 percent. However, the 28 successful films, out of the 253 released, made more money than the losses incurred by the remaining 225 films.

The credit for bringing the film industry from the throes of losses to a profit-making state goes mainly to five films released last year, viz. CHAK DE! INDIA, OM SHANTI OM, WELCOME, PARTNER and TAARE ZAMEEN PAR. The five films made a joint profit Rs. 125 crore, if their revenues from the theatrical, electronic and all other sources are considered. But for the huge profits earned by the five biggest hits of last year, the film industry's net result would have shown a loss, as during the last so many years.

Other than the five aforementioned films, the remaining profitable ventures made a total profit of Rs. 100 crore. As against the total profit of Rs. 225 crore earned by 28 films, the losses made by the producers, distributors and exhibitors in the remaining 225 films were to the tune of Rs. 205 crores.

Interestingly, in case of all the top five hits of 2007, it is the producers who made the maximum profit, not the distributors and that for two main reasons; either the distributors acquired the films at very high prices, or the films were not sold to distributors and were released by their producers themselves.
