Tarun Mansukhani, director who makes his debut with DOSTANA, is thankful to Karan Johar that he was there for support and advice as and when he needed it. Though he maintains that he got the film made in a way that he always wanted, there were some invaluable suggestions that came his way from Karan during the making of the film; especially when it came to the dialogues.
"The script of DOSTANA was written in English and when the first draft was out, Karan said that it was simply fantastic. Of course my day was made and I started the translation work from English and Hindi. This is where he asked me to hold on", says Tarun who has picked up a unique subject for his very first film.
"While I was planning to go for the literal translation from English to Hindi, Karan wanted me to have a relook at what turns out on paper once the translation was done. I realized that for 75% of the written material, most of the jokes plain and simple died. Things were just not working out. This is where Karan came to the rescue", fondly remembers Tarun.
He adds, "It was Karan who taught me the essence of dialogues. He rightly commented that one should not make the narrative heavy by keeping heavy duty dialogues. Also, one should remember the language of the character. Once I applied these changes, I could see fantastic results coming in. That's the comfort level one gets with Karan. He would always be there to give you a helping hand if you make a mistake."
